PUC Cuts Water Hike Request from Reynolds

Published on 8/13/1998

Harrisburg, Pa. August 13 - The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC) today said the Reynolds Water Co. in Mercer County may raise rates on five days’ notice if a requested $76,656 (21.4 percent) annual increase is reduced to $58,479 (16.4 percent).

Under the PUC’s recommendation, average annual residential bills would increase $35, from $220 to $255. The company’s proposal would have increased rates by $48 a year, to $268.

If the company refuses the lesser hike, the full increase request will be suspended for up to seven months from its August 14 proposed effective date and assigned to a PUC administrative law judge for a recommended decision.

Reynolds Water said the increase is needed to recover increased operating expenses and earn a reasonable return on plant investment. Rates were last raised in 1995, from $189 to $199 for an average annual residential bill.

The PUC received one letter from a customer protesting the increase.

Reynolds Water provides service to 729 customers in Pymatuning, Hempfield and Delaware townships in Mercer County.
