PUC OKs Agreement for Lower Rate Increase than Requested by York Water

HARRISBURG, Pa. – The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC) today approved an agreement for a lower rate increase than requested by York Water Co.

Under the settlement, York Water will raise rates by about $2.6 million (9 percent). According to the settlement, the monthly bill for an average residential customer on the gravity system using about 5,345 gallons of water will increase to $27.50 from $25.17.  For a consumer on the repumping system using 4,643 gallons of water, the monthly bill will increases to $33.95 from $31.21.

The company’s original proposal called for a rate increase of about $4.5 million (16 percent). Under that proposal, the monthly bill for an average residential customer on the gravity system would have increased to $29.25.  For a consumer on the repumping system, the monthly bill would have increased to $36.28.

York Water cannot file for another general rate increase before April 27, 2008, according to the settlement, which was reached between the company, the state’s Office of Consumer Advocate, the state’s Office of Small Business Advocate and the Commission’s Office of Trial Staff.

The increase would affect approximately 55,731 customers in York. According to the company, the increase is needed to allow the company to continue to provide adequate, safe and reliable service; to provide sufficient revenues to recover the cost of providing water service to its customers and to maintain its facilities.
