PUC Approves Settlement that Fines Erie County Taxi Company $4,050 for Violations

HARRISBURG – The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC) today approved a settlement agreement that fined Erie Transportation Services Inc., which operates as Erie Yellow Cab, $4,050 for violations that include providing service without Commission approval.

On Aug. 29, 2006, the Commission’s Bureau of Transportation and Safety filed a complaint alleging that the company was operating while its certificate of public convenience was suspended for failure to maintain proof of insurance with the Commission. During the investigation into the lapsed insurance coverage, it was discovered that the company failed to maintain complete log sheets and charge the proper rate found in its tariff.

By law, companies are required to hold a certificate of public convenience from the PUC in order to transport property, passengers or household goods within the state.  Holding a certificate of public convenience ensures that the company has met all of the PUC’s safety and insurance standards.

On Jan. 12, 2007, the PUC Law Bureau Prosecutory Staff and the company filed a settlement agreement where the company admitted partial fault, agreed to pay the $4,050 fine and will cease and desist from all further violations of the Public Utility Code or Commission regulations.
