Press Release

PUC to Investigate Condition of Montgomery County Rail-Highway Crossing

Published on 8/7/2008

HARRISBURG – The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC) today voted to investigate the conditions of the rail-highway crossing carrying Rockland Avenue over the tracks of National Railroad Passenger Corp. (Amtrak) in Narberth Borough, Montgomery County.

The Commission voted 5-0 to institute the investigation after no party would take responsibility for the repair or removal of the crossing, which is in poor condition and is currently closed.  The investigation will determine all matters relating to the subject crossing, such as feasibility of any necessary repairs or its removal.

A field investigation and conference held July 2, 2008, at the crossing, was attended by representatives of Amtrak, Narberth Borough, Lower Merion Township, Pennsylvania Department of Transportation and Lower Merion School District.  At the field conference, no party acknowledged responsibility for maintenance of the structure.

The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission balances the needs of consumers and utilities to ensure safe and reliable utility service at reasonable rates; protect the public interest; educate consumers to make independent and informed utility choices; further economic development; and foster new technologies and competitive markets in an environmentally sound manner.
