HARRISBURG – The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC) today approved a lower rate increase than requested for Rock Spring Water Co.

The Commission voted 5-0 to approve an annual increase of $38,829 (42.5 percent) in operating revenues.  The company had originally proposed an annual increase of $42,545 (46.4 percent).  According to the settlement, the average quarterly bill for a residential customer using 13,100 gallons of water each quarter will increase from $44.38 to $60.47 (36.2 percent).  The settlement was reached between the company, the PUC’s Office of Trial Staff and the state’s Office of Consumer Advocate.

The company provides water service to approximately 460 customers in portions of Ferguson Township, Centre County.   According to the company’s filing, the increase is necessary to obtain additional funds needed to maintain and update the system.

The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission balances the needs of consumers and utilities to ensure safe and reliable utility service at reasonable rates; protect the public interest; educate consumers to make independent and informed utility choices; further economic development; and foster new technologies and competitive markets in an environmentally sound manner.
