PUC Approves Lower Rate Increase than Requested for Superior Water Co.

HARRISBURG – The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC) today approved a lower rate increase than requested for Superior Water Co., Inc.

The Commission voted 5-0 to approve an annual increase of $522,500 (30.6 percent) in operating revenues for the company.  Superior Water had originally requested an annual increase of $599,771 (35 percent).  The joint settlement was reached between the company, the PUC’s Office of Trial Staff and the state’s Office of Consumer Advocate.  The average monthly residential bill will increase by $12.72 from $41.14 to $53.86.

The company provides service to approximately 2,700 customers in portions of Berks, Chester and Montgomery counties.  According to the company’s filing, one reason for the increase is for the investment in new plant facilities.

The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission balances the needs of consumers and utilities to ensure safe and reliable utility service at reasonable rates; protect the public interest; educate consumers to make independent and informed utility choices; further economic development; and foster new technologies and competitive markets in an environmentally sound manner.
