HARRISBURG – The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC) today approved a settlement that includes an increase in annual rates for UGI Central Penn Gas Inc.

The Commission voted 5-0 to approve the settlement, and a joint motion by PUC Chairman Robert F. Powelson and Commissioner James H. Cawley to approve the recovery of costs associated with the company’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation (EE&C) plan, directing Central Penn Gas to file the details of its EE&C plan within 60 days of the Final Order in this matter.

As part of the settlement reached among the company, the Commission’s Office of Trial Staff, the state’s Offices of Consumer Advocate and Small Business Advocate, the Central Penn Gas Large Users Group, the Pennsylvania Oil and Gas Association and the Commission on Economic Opportunity.

Also as part of the settlement, the company is allowed to raise its annual rates by $8.9 million (8.2 percent).  The average monthly bill for residential customers using 6.8 Mcf of gas per month will increase from $87.03 to $95.45 (9.7 percent). UGI Central Penn had originally requested an increase in annual rates of $16.5 million.  UGI Central Penn provides service to approximately 75,650 customers throughout 35 counties.

The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission balances the needs of consumers and utilities to ensure safe and reliable utility service at reasonable rates; protect the public interest; educate consumers to make independent and informed utility choices; further economic development; and foster new technologies and competitive markets in an environmentally sound manner.
