HARRISBURG – The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC) today approved a lower rate increase than requested by Pennsylvania American Water Co. (PAWC).

The Commission voted 5-0 to approve the joint settlement, which was reached among the company, the Office of Consumer Advocate, the Office of Small Business Advocate, the Commission’s Bureau of Investigation and Enforcement, the Pennsylvania American Water Large Users Group, and AK Steel Corporation.

As part of the settlement, a typical customer using 4,150 gallons per month will see rates increase from $48.45 per month to $51.52 per month or by $3.07 per month (6.3 percent).  Under the company’s original request, a typical customer using 4,150 gallons per month would have seen rates increase from $48.45 per month to $54.87 per month or by $6.42 per month (13.25 percent).

The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission balances the needs of consumers and utilities to ensure safe and reliable utility service at reasonable rates; protect the public interest; educate consumers to make independent and informed utility choices; further economic development; and foster new technologies and competitive markets in an environmentally sound manner.
