HARRISBURG – The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC) today voted to approve a lower rate increase request than requested by Audubon Water Co.

The Commission voted 5-0 to approve a settlement for an annual increase in rates of $342,500 (17 percent), as part of a phased-in increase.

Under phase-one rates, the total annual bill for the average residential customer using 72,000 gallons per year will increase $80.84 from $532.20 to $612.24 (15.04 percent).

Under phase-two rates, the total annual bill for the average residential customer using 72,000 gallons per year will increase $10.56 from $612.24 to $622.80 (1.73 percent).

Phase-two rates will only go into effect upon the company’s certification that certain preventative maintenance projected be completed by March 31, 2013.

Under the company’s original proposal, the annual bill for the average residential customer would have increased $143.64 annually from $532.20 to $675.84.

Audubon Water provides water service to approximately 3,000 customers in portions of Lower Providence Township, Montgomery County.

The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission balances the needs of consumers and utilities to ensure safe and reliable utility service at reasonable rates; protect the public interest; educate consumers to make independent and informed utility choices; further economic development; and foster new technologies and competitive markets in an environmentally sound manner.
