HARRISBURG – The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (Commission) today voted to investigate a proposed rate increase by Columbia Gas of Pennsylvania Inc. (Columbia or company).

The Commission voted 5-0 to investigate the request, which proposes an annual increase of revenues of $77.3 million (20.61 percent). The request is suspended for up to seven months and will be assigned to the Office of Administrative Law Judge for a recommended decision or settlement.

More information on the ratemaking process is available on the Commission’s website.

Under the Company’s proposal, the total monthly bill for a typical residential customer who purchases 73 therms of gas from Columbia each month would increase $15.75 from $67.17 to $82.92 (23.45 percent).

Columbia Gas of Pennsylvania Inc. provides natural gas service to approximately 411,000 customers in 26 counties in Pennsylvania.

The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission balances the needs of consumers and utilities to ensure safe and reliable utility service at reasonable rates; protect the public interest; educate consumers to make independent and informed utility choices; further economic development; and foster new technologies and competitive markets in an environmentally sound manner.
