PUC Directs Electric Utilities to Ask Customers Every 3 Years to Review Information Provided to Electric Suppliers

HARRISBURG – The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC) today directed the state’s electric distribution companies (EDCs) to reach out to customers every three years to give them the opportunity to review the information being provided to electric generation suppliers (EGSs).

The Commission voted 5-0 to direct the EDCs to proactively remind customers every three years of the ability include or restrict information being provided to EGSs. EDCs maintain an “eligible customer list” that contains customer information such as historic usage and addresses. Telephone numbers are not included in that information. EDCs then provide that list to EGSs. Customers can contact their EDC at any time to restrict the information being provided to the EGSs.

The lists are designed to provide EGSs with important information that will allow licensed competitive suppliers to more readily identify potential retail customers and better tailor products and service offerings to meet customers’ needs. EGSs also must comply with the state’s “Do Not Call” list.

The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission balances the needs of consumers and utilities; ensures safe and reliable utility service at reasonable rates; protects the public interest; educates consumers to make independent and informed utility choices; furthers economic development; and fosters new technologies and competitive markets in an environmentally sound manner.
