Audit Examines Management & Operations at PECO Detailing Potential for $15 Million in Annual Savings and $13.5 Million in One-Time Savings

HARRISBURG – The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC) today released the results of a detailed Management and Operations Audit of the PECO Energy Company (PECO), identifying the potential for $15 million in annual savings for customers, along with $13.5 million in one-time savings.

The review examined key functional areas at PECO, which serves approximately 1.67 million electric customers and 537,000 natural gas customers across seven counties in southeastern Pennsylvania.

The Commission voted 3-0 today to release the PECO Audit Report, along with the Implementation Plan that was submitted by PECO to address recommendations in the report.

Audit Report and Recommendations

The PUC audit report includes 22 recommendations that identify savings and service improvements for PECO customers, including:

  • Reducing overtime hours for electric operations and natural gas operations staff.
  • Submitting a detailed proposal to credit ratepayers for corrected billings related to the use of PECO’s fiber network.
  • Reducing the number of customers experiencing multiple service interruptions.
  • Reducing outages caused by vegetation or equipment failures.
  • Reducing company-at-fault hits on gas infrastructure.
  • Accelerating the rate of GPS location for key gas infrastructure.
  • Continuing outreach to engage payment-troubled customer and leverage pandemic and low income resources to help reduce the overall level of outstanding customer balances.

PECO’s implementation plan accepts 19 of the recommendations detailed in the PUC audit report and partially agrees with the remaining three recommendations.
