Harrisburg, Pa., October 16, 1998 -- The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC) today approved settlements allowing the affiliated Shangri-La water and sewer companies in Chester County rate increases totaling $88,000 annually, instead of $123,927 originally proposed.

Under the settlements, sewer rates will increase by $55,000 annually rather than $73,641 initially sought. The annual residential bill for flat rate service will increase $134, from $360 to $494. Water rates will increase by $33,000 annually rather than $50,256 proposed. Average annual residential bills will increase $60, from $242 to $302. Current rates have been in effect since the companies were PUC certificated in 1986.

The companies also agreed to offer customers a monthly bill option and not to file for another rate increase before December 30, 1998.

Parties to the settlements were the companies, the PUC’s Office of Trial Staff and two formal complainants in the case. PUC Administrative Law Judge Ky Van Nguyen recommended their approval in a September 16 decision.

Shangri-La provides sewer and water service to 383 customers in New Garden Township, Chester County.
