HARRISBURG, Pa. The Public Utility Commission (PUC) reminds consumers that two new area codes for the 215-610 calling areas are set to go into effect on June 5, requiring customers to dial 10 digits for all calls. The new 267 area code will work in the same region as 215. The new 484 area code will work in the same region as 610.
"The new area codes will be implemented by overlays," said Kevin Cadden, PUC manager of communications. "This means that the current geographic area code regions of 215 and 610 will retain their existing boundaries and all current customers will keep their area codes. Only customers receiving new telephone numbers will be assigned the new area codes."
Beginning June 5, all calls within and between the four area codes will require 10-digit dialing. A customer dialing seven digits will receive a recording advising that 10-digit dialing is now mandatory.
"Its important to remember that while 10-digit dialing is mandatory, calls that are presently local calls will remain local calls and toll calls will remain toll calls," added Cadden.
The PUC approved the new area codes in May 1998. Since that time, telephone companies have been educating customers about the change through bill inserts and other consumer education materials.
The addition of the two new area codes brings the states total number of area codes to nine.
