HARRISBURG, Pa. - The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC) today approved a settlement that will allow the Applewood Water Company in Luzerne County to increase rates by $3,492 (69.1 percent). The company had originally asked for a $6,155 (122 percent) increase in a December filing.

Under the PUC recommendation, average residential bills will increase $120 annually, from $174 to $294, based on 6,500 gallons of water. Rates wee last raised in 1991.

Parties to the settlement included the company and the PUC’s Office of Trial Staff. PUC Administrative Law Judge Louis G. Cocheres recommended its approval.

One customer filed a formal complaint against the increase. On March 18, 1999, the PUC suspended the company’s filing for investigation. Applewood used the PUC’s Alternative Dispute Resolution process for rapid resolution of this case.

Applewood Water serves 29 residential customers in Dallas Township, Luzerne County.
