HARRISBURG, Pa. - The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC) today approved a settlement with East Fallowfield Utilities that will allow the water company to raise rates by $5,118 on one day's notice to customers. The Chester County company had originally requested a $14,538 annual increase in water rates.

Under the settlement, the total bill for an average residential customer using approximately 13,000 gallons per quarter will increase about $13, from $78 to $91. Under the company’s proposal, average residential bills would have increased approximately $43 per quarter, from $78 to $121. The company last raised rates in March 1994.

East Fallowfield will also change its rate structure to include a quarterly customer charge of $48 for residential customers and $75 for commercial customers. In addition, residential customers will pay a consumption charge of $3.35 per thousand gallons and commercial customers will pay $3 per thousand gallons.

The company filed its request on March 8. The PUC suspended the company's original request on April 29 for further investigation. PUC Administrative Law Judge Isador Kranzel recommended that the PUC accept the settlement.
