HARRISBURG, Pa. - The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC) today suspended for investigation the request of the Pennsylvania-American Water Company for a $40 million (14.22 percent) annual increase in water rates.

Under the company’s proposal, average residential bills would increase $47 a year, from $372 to $419, based on 57,600 gallons of water used. Rates were last raised by $27 million in October 1997.

The $40 million increase will be suspended for up to seven months from its June 29 proposed effective date and assigned to a PUC administrative law judge for a recommended decision.

The company said it needs to increase rates to construct and replace facilities and continue to meet state and federal drinking water regulations.

Pennsylvania-American provides service to approximately 537,000 customers in 31 counties across the state.
