HARRISBURG, Pa. - The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC) today approved a settlement that will allow Mountain Spring Water Company to increase rates by $5,731 (49.2 percent).

Under the settlement, the company’s proposal an average residential bill would increase approximately $81 a year, form $364 to $445 based on 54,000 gallons of water used. Mountain Spring Water serves 34 residential customers and four commercial customers in Tamaqua, Schuylkill County.

The company said it needs to increase rates to recover the cost of providing water services to its customers. Rates were last raised in 1993. The administrative law judge, George M. Kashi, recommended on June 1, 2000 that the settlement be approved.
