HARRISBURG, Pa. - The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC) today suspended for investigation the request of Emporium Water Company for a $259,937 (40.2 percent) annual increase in rates.

Under the company’s proposal an average residential bill would increase approximately $94 a year, from $233 to $327 based on 33,000 gallons of water used.

The proposed increase will be suspended for up to seven months from its May 31, 2000, proposed effective date and assigned to a PUC administrative law judge for a recommended decision.

The company said it needs to increase rates to recover increased operating expenses and to realize a reasonable rate of return on its fixed capital investment. One protest was filed. Rates were last raised in 1995.

Emporium Water Company serves 1,403 residential customers, 111 commercial and 17 industrial customers in Emporium, Cameron County.
