HARRISBURG, Pa. - The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC) today voted to suspend and investigate the request of Tri-Valley Water Supply, El-Do Lake Division for a $6,564 (17.8 percent) annual increase in rates.

Under the company’s proposal an average residential bill would increase approximately $56 a year, from $325 to $381, based on 36,000 gallons of water used. The increase would affect 114 residential customers in Palmerton, Carbon County.

The proposed increase will be suspended for up to seven months from its October 1, 2000, proposed effective date and assigned to a PUC administrative law judge for a recommended decision or settlement. The recommended decision is then sent to the commissioners to make the final decision in a public meeting held in Harrisburg.

The company said it needs to increase rates to recover increased operating expenses and to earn an adequate rate of return. Formal complaints have been filed.
