HARRISBURG, Pa. - The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC) today suspended for investigation the request of Cooperstown Water Company for a $5,440 (14.8 percent) annual increase in water rates.

Under the company’s proposal, an average residential bill would increase approximately $44 a year, from $287 to $331 based on 60,000 gallons of water used.

The proposed increase will be suspended until July 20, 2000, and assigned to a PUC administrative law judge for a recommended decision.

The company said it needs to increase rates to recover increased operating expenses. Rates were last raised January 17, 1996.

Cooperstown Water Company serves 130 metered residential customers and one commercial customer in the Borough of Cooperstown, Venango County.
