PUC Suspends Request for Rate Increase by Mountain Spring Water

HARRISBURG, Pa. - The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC) today suspended for investigation the request of Mountain Spring Water Company for a $5,731 (49.2 percent) annual increase in rates.
Under the companys proposal an average residential bill would increase approximately $85 a year, form $387 to $472 based on 62,000 gallons of water used.
The proposed increase will be suspended for up to seven months from its January 14, 2000, proposed effective date and assigned to a PUC administrative law judge for a recommended decision.
The company said it needs to increase rates to recover the cost of providing water services to its customers. Rates were last raised in 1993. Formal protests have been filed.
Mountain Spring Water serves 34 residential customers and one commercial customer in Tamaqua.
