HARRISBURG -- The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC) has approved a settlement that will allow Columbia Water Company to increase water rates by $290,000 (12.4 percent).

The company had requested a $553,456 (23.7 percent) annual rate increase.

Under the settlement, the average residential bill will increase approximately $2 per month from $18 to $20 based on 3,000 gallons of water used. The increase will affect 7,316 residential customers in West Hempfield and Manor townships and the boroughs of Columbia and Mountville, Lancaster County.

The proposed increase will become effective on one day’s notice after the Commission’s order is officially entered. Administrative Law Judge Herbert S. Cohen recommended on Oct. 30 that the settlement be approved.

The company said the increase is necessary to provide proper maintenance of the system and to recover increased operating expenses.
