PUC Fines Pittston Area Taxicab Company $1,250 for Violations

Published on 8/30/2001

HARRISBURG, Pa. – The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC) has fined a Duryea, Luzerne County, taxicab company $1,250 for two violations of offering service without holding a certificate of public convenience issued by the PUC.

In June, the PUC’s Bureau of Transportation and Safety instituted a complaint and suggested a fine of $1,250 for the violations against Pittston Area Taxicab Company. The company had 30 days to respond to the complaint or the fine would be imposed. The PUC did not receive a response during that time.

On May 24, 2001, a PUC enforcement officer witnessed two of the company’s taxis transporting customers for compensation. Both taxis were identified with a PUC license number, even though Pittston Taxicab’s certificate of public convenience was canceled on May 17, 2001.
