PUC Suspends Rate Increase Request for Columbia Water Company

Published on 7/13/2001

HARRISBURG, Pa. - The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC) today suspended a request by Columbia Water Company to increase rates by $553,456 (23.7 percent).

Under the company’s proposal an average residential bill would increase approximately $52 annually, from $216 to $268, based on 36,000 gallons of water used. The increase would affect 7,216 residential and 305 commercial and industrial customers in Lancaster County.

The proposed increase will be suspended for up to seven months from its July 24, 2001, proposed effective date and assigned to a PUC administrative law judge for a recommended decision or settlement. The recommended decision is then sent to the commissioners to make the final decision in a public meeting held in Harrisburg.

The company said the current filing is necessary to realize a reasonable rate of return on the company’s fixed capital investment and to recover increased operating expenses.
