HARRISBURG – On Thursday, May 9, representatives of Pennsylvania’s electric utilities and PJM Interconnection will brief the Public Utility Commission (PUC) on their plans for maintaining service reliability during this summer, including how they may reduce customer electricity demand.

The meeting will be held at 1:30 p.m. in Hearing Room 1 on the second floor of the Commonwealth Keystone Building in Harrisburg, and is open to the public.

"Each year, we hold this meeting to focus on energy prices and the need for prudent energy planning to meet demand in the summer months," said PUC Chairman Glen R. Thomas. "Long-range forecasts and planning allow the PUC and our electric utilities to work together to ensure that we have capacity above and beyond the projected demand.

"This meeting also allows us to focus on demand side response, or reducing the amount of electricity customers use during periods of high electric use, such as hot weather days."

Speakers at the meeting will include:

  • Doug Biden, President, Electric Power Generation Association;
  • Karl Pfirrmann, Allegheny Power Company;
  • Nancy Krajovic, John Rosser, Duquesne Light Company;
  • Mark Sudbey, Reliant Energy;
  • Mark Fraley, FirstEnergy/GPU/Pennsylvania Power Company;
  • J. Michael Love, President and CEO Energy Association of America;
  • Yvette M. Brown, Manager of Capacity Adequacy Planning Department, PJM; and
  • Ahmed Kaloko, PUC’s Director of Conservation, Economics and Energy Planning.

The PUC holds reliability meetings before each winter and summer season.
