PUC Approves Application of Suburban Emergency Medical Services

Published on 10/10/2002

HARRISBURG - The Public Utility Commission (PUC) today tentatively approved the application of Suburban Emergency Medical Services to provide paratransit service between points in Lehigh, Northampton and Monroe counties, and from points in those counties to other points in Pennsylvania and back.

The paratransit service is limited to transportation of people who are non-ambulatory, or who require medical monitoring due to chronic or acute physical or mental conditions. All services are provided by state-certified emergency medical technicians in modified vehicles capable of handling wheelchairs.

The tentative order will be published in the Pennsylvania Bulletin. The public will have 10 days from the date of publication to file written comments to the PUC or to request an oral hearing before the Commission. If no comments are received or if no one requests an oral hearing, the tentative order will become final and the company may begin providing service.

The PUC tentatively approved Suburban’s application by a 4 – 1 vote, with Commissioner Terrance Fitzpatrick dissenting. (Statement of Chairman Glen R. Thomas) (Statement of Commissioner Terrance Fitzpatrick)
