PUC Approves Fare Increase for Northern Emergency Management Service

HARRISBURG - The Public Utility Commission (PUC) today approved fare increases for Northern Emergency Management Service (EMS) to provide paratransit service in Somerset and Cambria counties and to other points in Pennsylvania.
The average flat rate for a trip will increase $1.50, from $15 to $16.50 per passenger on a one-way trip. The company last increased rates in December 1998.
The company said the fare increase was necessary to cover increased yearly driver salaries and other general operating costs. Scalp Level-Paint Volunteer Fire Company and Windber Volunteer Fire Company No. 1 operate Northern EMS.
The paratransit service is limited to transportation of persons who are non-ambulatory, or persons who, due to chronic or acute physical or mental conditions, require pre-trip preparation. All services are provided by state-certified emergency medical technicians in modified vehicles capable of handling wheelchairs.
