PUC Fines Philadelphia Moving Company $6,000 for Violations

HARRISBURG – The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC) today fined a Philadelphia company $6,000 for 24 violations, including offering service from a different territory than authorized by the PUC.

A PUC enforcement officer performed an audit of Superior Moving and Storage on July 18, and discovered the violations. In October, the PUC’s Bureau of Transportation and Safety instituted a complaint and recommended the fine. The company had 20 days to respond to the complaint or the fine would be imposed. The PUC did not receive a response during that time.

Superior Moving and Storage’s violations included:

  • Rendering service outside of the territory authorized in the company’s certificate of public convenience on one occasion;
  • Charging an improper rate other than what is specified in the tariff at eight different times; and
  • Failure to furnish the shipper with the proper "Information for Shippers" statement prior to the preparation of an order for service on 15 different occasions.

The company was fined $250 for each violation, totaling $6,000.

The July audit was a follow-up audit to an audit performed in January. In the first audit, the company was fined $6,750 for 45 violations. Since 1998, the company has had 8 complaints instituted against it by the Commission. If Superior Moving and Storage continues to violate the PUC’s rules and regulations, the company’s certificate of public convenience may be suspended or revoked.

The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission ensures safe, reliable and reasonably priced electric, natural gas, water, telephone and transportation service for Pennsylvania consumers, by regulating public utilities and by serving as responsible stewards of competition.
