PUC Suspends Request for Rate Increase by Audubon Water Company

Published on 3/14/2002

HARRISBURG -The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC) today voted to suspend and investigate Audubon Water Company’s request for a $416,757 (33 percent) rate increase.

Under the company’s proposal, the average annual residential bill for customers using 60,000 gallons of water would increase approximately $110, from $323 to $433. The rate increase would affect approximately 2,180 residential customers.

The proposed increase will be suspended for up to seven months from its March 18 proposed effective date and assigned to a PUC administrative law judge for a recommended decision or settlement. The recommended decision then will be sent to the Commissioners to make the final decision in a public meeting in Harrisburg.

The company said the increase is needed to cover operating cost and expenses related to safe drinking water regulations. Protests have been filed. The last rate increase was in 1998.

Audubon Water Company provides service in Norristown, Montgomery County.

The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission ensures safe, reliable and reasonably priced electric, natural gas, water, telephone and transportation service for Pennsylvania consumers, by regulating public utilities and by serving as responsible stewards of competition.
