PUC Approves PGW Settlement Agreement

Published on 2/6/2003

HARRISBURG - The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC) has approved a settlement between the Philadelphia Gas Works (PGW) and Commission prosecutory staff under which PGW will pay a $17,500 fine to resolve allegations that PGW terminated customers who filed informal complaints with the PUC.

Under the Commission’s regulations, companies must take the necessary steps to ensure that customers who file an informal complaint are not placed in the termination process prior to their complaints being resolved by the Commission.

The PUC’s Bureau of Consumer Services and Law Bureau conducted an informal investigation after 117 customers filed informal complaints stating that their service was terminated after having previously filed informal complaints.

The Commission, in approving the settlement agreement, is satisfied with PGW’s plan for corrective action.  The PUC will continue to monitor PGW complaint handling to ensure that the corrective action plan is effective.

The company has 30 days from the entry date of today’s order to pay the fine.

The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission ensures safe, reliable and reasonably priced electric, natural gas, water, telephone and transportation service for
Pennsylvania consumers, by regulating public utilities and by serving as responsible stewards of competition.
