HARRISBURG – The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC) today approved a settlement that will allow Schuylkill Haven Water Company to increase water rates by $385,790 (63.9 percent) in Schuylkill Haven, Schuylkill County.  The proposed increase will be implemented in two steps.

Under the first phase, rates will increase by $243,980 and the annual bill for an average residential customer will increase approximately $118, from $279 to $397.  After a new water-treatment plant is online, the annual average residential bill will increase to $419.

The rate increase will affect approximately 786 residential customers.  The company had requested a $548,356 (90.73 percent) rate increase.  The last increase was in February 1999.

In October 2002, the Commission voted to investigate the company’s request.  Administrative Law Judge Herbert Smolen held public input hearings in Schuylkill Haven on
Dec. 10, 2002, to receive public comments on the proposed rate increase.  Seven people testified at the hearing.  Judge Smolen recommended the settlement be approved on Jan. 31, 2003
.

The proposed increase will become effective on one day’s notice after the Commission’s order is officially entered. The company cannot to file another general rate increase for at least one year from the date the order is entered.
