PUC Cancels Service for Two Philadelphia Cab Companies

Published on 11/13/2003

HARRISBURG – The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC) today canceled the certificate of public convenience for Lal Cab Company and Okey Cab Company for operating in Philadelphia while under suspension for failing to provide proof of insurance to the Commission.  Each company was fined $1,000 for the violation and $100 for failure to comply with the suspension.

In April 2003, the PUC’s Bureau of Transportation and Safety instituted a complaint and recommended a fine of $1,000 for the violation against Lal Cab Company of Philadelphia.  The company had 30 days to respond to the complaint or the fine would be imposed.  The PUC did not receive a response during that time.

In July 2003, the PUC also instituted a complaint against Okey Cab Company of
Philadelphia.  The taxi company was given 30 days to respond to the complaint or the fine of $1,000 would be imposed.  The PUC did not receive a response during that time.

Each company has to turn in the medallions to the PUC within five days of this order for safekeeping.  The taxi companies also have the right to sell their medallions within six months of today’s order.  If the medallions are not sold within six months, the medallions become nontransferable and must be surrendered to the PUC.

For Lal Cab Company and Okey Cab Company to resume operations, they must file a petition for reinstatement, which the PUC will review and make a decision.

The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission ensures safe, reliable and reasonably priced electric, natural gas, water, telephone and transportation service for
Pennsylvania consumers, by regulating public utilities and by serving as responsible stewards of competition.
