Published on 1/29/2004

HARRISBURG – The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC) has approved a settlement that will allow the Nittany Water Company to increase rates by $34,500.  The company had originally asked for a $72,000 rate increase.

Under the settlement, the annual bill for an average residential customer using 48,000 gallons of water will increase approximately $52 from $146 to $198.  The rate increase will affect approximately 520 customers in Walker Township, Centre County, and Porter Township, Clinton County.  Also, as part of the settlement, the company agreed not to file for another rate hike for at least one year.

The proposed increase will become effective on one day’s notice after the Commission’s order is officially entered.  Administrative Law Judge Michael Schnierle recommended on Dec. 10, 2003, that the settlement be approved.

The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission ensures safe, reliable and reasonably priced electric, natural gas, water, telephone and transportation service for Pennsylvania consumers, by regulating public utilities and by serving as responsible stewards of competition.
