PUC Offers Tips to Ensure Safe Transportation Service during Prom and Wedding Season

Published on 5/6/2004

HARRISBURG – With the prom and wedding season starting, the Public Utility Commission (PUC) reminds customers that limousine operators and taxicabs must be registered with the PUC and have proof of insurance on file.

Parents and students are advised not to sign a contract with a limousine company or use a taxicab that does not hold a certificate of public convenience issued by the PUC. Certificate numbers begin with A-000 or A-001 and consist of a total of eight digits. Without that number, they may not legally provide transportation service in Pennsylvania. Limousine companies are not required to display their PUC certificate number on the vehicle itself, but customers should ask that it be noted on the contract. Taxicabs must display the certificate number on the vehicle.

The PUC monitors certificated carriers for insurance coverage, driver and vehicle safety, rates, territory and service.

Should anyone want to contact the PUC to check the violation history of a carrier or the status of its authority, they can contact the District Office located nearest to where the transportation will take place.
