PUC Suspends Request for Rate Increase by Wellsboro Electric Company

HARRISBURG – The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC) today voted to suspend and investigate Wellsboro Electric Company’s request for a $689,340 (7.6 percent) annual increase in rates.

Under the company’s proposal, the average annual bill for a residential customer using 6,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity would increase approximately $50, from $536 to $586. The increase would affect 5,823 customers in the Borough of Wellsboro and the townships of Charleston , Delmar and Middlebury, Tioga County .

The proposed increase will be suspended until May 28, 2005, from its proposed effective date of Oct. 28 and assigned to a PUC administrative law judge for a recommended decision. The Commissioners must make a final decision at a public meeting before May 28.
