HARRISBURG – The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC) today voted to suspend and investigate a request by York Water Company to increase rates by $4.9 million (22.1 percent).

The proposed increase will be suspended for up to seven months from its June 27, 2004, proposed effective date and assigned to a PUC administrative law judge for a recommended decision or settlement, which will be sent to the Commissioners to make a final decision.

Under the proposal, average residential bills for gravity system customers would increase approximately $58 annually, from $250 to $308, based on usage of 60,000 gallons.  Customers on the repumping system would see bills increase about $77 annually, from $337 to $414, based on 60,000 gallons per year.  The rate increase will affect 51,916 customers.

Rates were last raised in September 1999, when the PUC approved a $927,472 increase.  The company had originally asked for $1.5 million.
