PUC Approves Lower Rate Increase than Requested for Water Company in Adams and York Counties

HARRISBURG – The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC) today voted to approve a rate increase request by the Borough of Hanover – Hanover Municipal Water Works for customers it serves outside of the borough limits.
The Commission voted 5-0 to approve a settlement to increase the company’s annual rates by $782,000 (24 percent). The company had originally requested an increase of $980,973 (29.7 percent). According to the Settlement which was reached among the Borough of Hanover, the PUC’s Bureau of Investigation and Enforcement, the Office of Consumer Advocate, the Office of Small Business Advocate and Hanover Foods, the quarterly bill for residential customers using 12,000 gallons of water per quarter will increase $10.62 from $48.13 to $58.75 (22.1 percent).
Hanover Municipal Waterworks provides service to 9,941 jurisdictional customers in Penn Township, York County; Conewago Township and McSherrystown, Adams County. The Commission only has jurisdiction for rates and service over those customers who live outside the borough and are serviced by Borough of Hanover. The Water Works also provides service to 6,673 customers in Hanover Borough, over which the PUC has no jurisdiction.
