PUC Announces Public Input Hearings for Electric Service Rate Increase by UGI Utilities

Telephonic Hearings Scheduled for April 28 to Gather Input from Concerned Individuals and Organizations

HARRISBURG – The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC) today announced a pair of late-April telephonic hearings to gather public input on a rate increase for electric service proposed by UGI Utilities, Inc. – Electric Division (UGI).

PUC Public Input Hearings

The UGI rate case public input hearings are scheduled on the following date and times:

  • Wednesday, April 28, 2021
    Hearings will begin at 1 p.m. and 6 p.m.

Administrative Law Judge Steven K. Haas will preside over both hearings.

Signing Up to Testify for the Public Input Hearings

If you wish to testify at the telephonic public input hearing, you must register by Friday, April 23, 2021 at 1 p.m. Interested parties may register for the public input hearings by telephoning the Office of Consumer Advocate (OCA) at 1-800-684-6560 and providing their name, telephone number, email address, and the topic of your testimony. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call the OCA.

Beginning at 1 p.m. & 6 p.m. on Wednesday, April 28, 2021, customers will testify in the order they signed up. If you do not pre-register, you will not be able to testify.

If you have any hearing exhibits to which you will refer during the hearing, one (1) copy must be emailed to the Administrative Law Judge at sthaas@pa.gov and one (1) copy each must be sent to every other party. All copies must be emailed no later than three (3) business days before the hearings. You must email the Presiding Officer with a copy of ANY document you file in this case.

If you require an interpreter to participate in the hearings, we will make every reasonable effort to have an interpreter present. Please email the Presiding Officer at least three (3) business days prior to your hearing to submit your request. Participating in the Public Input Hearings

People pre-registered to testify during the hearings, along with parties interested in listening to the proceedings, must do the following:

  • Dial the toll-free number listed below.
  • Enter a PIN number when instructed to do so, also listed below.
  • Speak your name when prompted – the telephone system will connect you to the hearing.

UGI’s Rate Increase Request

UGI’s request, filed on Feb. 8, 2021, would increase annual revenues by $8.7 million (10%).  Under UGI’s proposal, the average monthly bill for a residential customer using 1,000 kWh per month would increase from $110.18 to $123.83 (12.4%).

UGI provides electric service to about 64,400 residential, commercial and industrial customers in portions of Luzerne and Wyoming counties.

Offering Testimony at a Public Input Hearing

The PUC offers tips on how to participate in a public input hearing, including:

  • Prepare what you are going to say beforehand. Even though it is not required, you may want to write out your statement, which can be read.
  • Any formal testimony that is offered during the hearing will become part of the record on which the PUC will issue its final decision.
  • Understand that parties in the case may want to ask you a question to clarify something you said.
