PUC to Investigate Proposed Rate Increase by Philadelphia Gas Works
Published on 4/20/2023
HARRISBURG – The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC) voted today to investigate a rate increase request filed by Philadelphia Gas Works (PGW), which provides natural gas distribution services to approximately 516,000 customers in the City of Philadelphia.
The Commission voted 5-0 to investigate the request, which was filed on February 27, 2023.
The changes proposed by PGW would produce an annual overall revenue increase of approximately $85.8 million (10.3%). PGW’s proposal would result in the total monthly bill for a residential customer using 71 Mcf per year increasing from $125.38 to $137.73 (about 9.9%). In its filing, PGW also proposes increasing its monthly residential customer charge from $14.90 to $19.50.
Today’s action by the Commission suspends the rate increase request for up to seven months and the case will now be assigned to the PUC’s Office of Administrative Law Judge for an investigation and recommended decision. More information on the ratemaking process is available on the Commission’s website.
A final decision by the Commission on this rate increase request is due by Nov. 28, 2023.
