| Case Description | Office of Competitive Market Oversight (OCMO) and the Bureau of Consumer Services (BCS) had been receiving reports from multiple sources of residential consumers receiving disturbing telemarketing calls. The calls would initially be a robocall – informing the consumer that they have been overcharged and were qualified for a “refund” and/or a “reward” – and to press one to hear more. Upon pressing one, the consumer would be connected to a sales agent who failed to identify who they worked for. Upon being asked, agents would provide a name. However, the multiple reports OCMO received named several different suppliers – and upon contacting the suppliers named, the suppliers would deny responsibility. It soon became apparent that the agents were providing erroneous supplier names when identifying themselves – possibly to make it difficult if not impossible to identify the supplier responsible. | ||
